Australia to Launch New MATES Migration Scheme for Indians
Australia and India are drawing closer under a new mobility arrangement as the MATES scheme prepares to open for applications from late 2024.
Recently, the Australian Minister for Immigration, Citizenship, and Multicultural Affairs, Andrew Giles, announced that MATES would be open for applications from late 2024.
What is Australia’s MATES for Indians?
MATES stands for the Mobility Arrangement for Talented Early-professionals Scheme. Established under the Australia-India Migration and Mobility Partnership Arrangement signed on May 23, 2023, MATES is a pilot program designed for young professionals and graduates from India. With a target of offering 3000 temporary visas annually, MATES allows candidates to live and study in Australia for two years, provided they meet the eligibility criteria and possess sufficient skills.

Eligibility Criteria for Australia MATES Visa
The eligibility requirements for the Australian MATES Visa include being below the age of 31, having graduated from a recognized university, possessing necessary educational qualifications, being a recent graduate, and being in the early stages of one’s career.
Which Fields are Eligible for the Australia MATES Visa?
The MATES pathway encompasses seven fields, allowing Indians to live and work in Australia for up to two years:
- Agricultural technology (AgriTech)
- Artificial intelligence (AI)
- Engineering
- Financial technology (FinTech)
- Information and communication technology (ICT)
- Mining
- Renewable energy
