Canada’s job growth marks highest spike in six years. 40,000 new jobs added in April 2023
- Despite rate hikes by the central bank, Canada added higher-than-expected 41,000 jobs in April, while unemployment rate remained steady at 5%, near the record low of 4.9% observed in June and July 2022.
Provinces having highest employment rate
- Among the regions, employment rose in Ontario (+33,000) and Prince Edward Island (+2,200) in April, while it declined in Manitoba (-4,000). There was little change in the other provinces.

- The number of unemployed persons in Canada stood at 1.1 million in April, and the majority had been unemployed for 13 weeks or less (64.3%). The proportion who had been unemployed for 27 weeks or more—the long-term unemployed—was 15.4%, down from 19.5% a year earlier, and in line with the pre-pandemic proportion of 15.3% in February 2020.
Canada taking steps to increase its economic growth
- Canada is introducing new measures to increase its economy and fulfil its 2023-25 immigration targets. Recently, it announced the hike in hourly pay for both salaried professionals, temporary foreign workers, and hourly paid workers. It also introduced new paths for foreign candidates for easy immigration.
