Understanding PTE Syllabus

The syllabus of all the English testing exams is nearly the same. The syllabus of the PTE varies from time to time and is subject to change.

The PTE exam tests your English skills in 3 main sections: The speaking and writing section, reading, and listening section.
The duration of the exam is around 2 hours and 15 minutes. The mode of the exam is computer-based. Questions can be of various types: MCQs, Fill in the blanks, short answer types, etc.

The PTE exam tests your knowledge and fluency in English through different sections. All the sections are designed to test different skill sets.
The speaking and writing section is the most extended section of the PTE exam. This section tests how clearly and fluently you can speak and how creative and proper is your writing.
All these sections are designed to judge your English up to a level that will be required in an academic institution.
The speaking and writing section lasts approximately 54 – 67 minutes.
This section will contain 7 different types of questions.
Students are often confused regarding the topics in the essay and summarization section. The topics in these sub-sections vary a lot, but all of them are general.
You do not need to be the subject expert to write on them. The syllabus of the PTE essay writing section is Environment, politics, Current Affairs, education, etc.

The reading section of the PTE is considered most easy because of its easy-to-cover syllabus. The reading action of the PTE tests the reading skills of the candidate.
This section is divided into 5 sub-sections which have different types of questions. You need to understand which sub-section has what type of questions. The PTE reading section is 29 – 30 minutes in duration.

Below is the breakdown of sub-sections in the reading section of the PTE.

There are two sub-types of multiple-choice questions:

Single-answer MCQs
multiple-answer MCQs.
You will be given a question based on a 300-word text in the single-answer question. You must read the text thoroughly and choose one correct answer from the 4 given options.
In multiple answers, correct type MCQs, too, you will be given a question based on a different 300-word passage, and you will have to identify all the correct options from the 4 given options.
The text in these questions has a general subject like education, current affairs, environment, etc. You won’t need any background in the type of passage, all the information required will be given in the text.
In Re-order paragraph type questions, you must read a 150-word paragraph and then re-order the paragraph.
The syllabus of this type of paragraph varies, but generally, these are paragraphs from a news article or a magazine. You can expect any text which is describing a series of events.

The listening section of the PTE exam is also easy. This section aims to evaluate your listening skills. You will be hearing different recordings, and then you will have to answer some questions related to those recordings. The listening section of the PTE is of 30 – 43 minutes.

In the write from dictation subsection, you will be hearing the audio, and then you will simply have to write what you have heard.
You will not be asked any questions related to the audio in writing from the dictation section. You just need to have excellent listening skills.
Summarizing spoken text is another sub-section of the listening section. It also requires you to listen to audio and summarize the text in your words. The spoken audio can be of any topic but will be general.
